The Cupcake Truck’s Midtown Debut!
CupcakeStop, the new truck selling everyone’s favorite nostalgic treat, is set for its first full weekday in midtown this Wednesday, July 22. The truck will be parked at 47th St. and 3rd Ave.
Since opening for business last month, the cupcake truck has been parked most days on the west side of the Flatiron Building, 5th Ave. between 22nd and 23rd Sts. It usually offers four or five flavors a day. Red velvet is the top seller, according to CupcakeStop owner Lev Ekster, but you also have your choice of such innovative mouth—waterers as chocolate cheesecake, banana chocolate chip, lemon, cappuccino, oreo crumb, fluffernutter, coconut creme, rocky road and tie dye (vanilla cupcake and frosting dyed a "psychedelic" color). There’s even a cookie dough cupcake on some days.
Food trucks and cupcakes have been two of NYC’s biggest culinary crazes in recent years, so it was only a matter of time before someone merged the ideas. That someone was recent law-school grad Ekster, whom you should be able to meet in the truck. And he employs another recent craze, Twitter, to keep people informed of his truck’s location and products. Check the website CupCakeStop.com or Twitter.com/cupcakestop for updates.
CupcakeStop charges $2.25 for a "full size," $1.00 for a mini. A dozen costs $25 and $10, respectively. They also make pudding (banana, dark chocolate, etc.) and sell coffee and a variety of teas. And they’ve been giving out a coupon for a free mini cupcake with every purchase, so you may be in for a bonus with your sugar rush!
If you visit the cupcake truck at its usual Flatiron location, you can enjoy your snack at an outdoor café table around the corner or across 23rd St. One of the city’s new pedestrian malls has been set up at 23rd St. where 5th Ave. and Broadway cross, extending along Broadway south of 23rd. This summer, the city closed off several areas along Broadway, from 57th St. down, to cars—some just have walking/biking lanes, others have benches, tables and chairs, and in parts of Times Square, there are beach chairs (including chaise lounges) and oversize hand–shaped seats. The 23rd St. section is protected from the vehicle lanes by giant flowerpots and boulders. —Adrienne Onofri
