Upper West Side Guide

In contrast to Upper East Side, Upper West Side has reputation as being more earthy and liberal. It is the home of influential artistic and cultural workers. This neighborhood is bounded by Central Park and the Hudson River and with restaurants a plenty on Amsterdam Avenue from 67th Street up to 110th Street, Elegant, pre-war buildings and brownstones along the boulevards of Broadway, West End Avenue, Riverside Drive and Central Park West are what this residential neighborhood is famous for. Much of the area is protected by landmark status, and the neighborhood's restored townhouses and high-priced co-op apartments are populated by some of New York’s most successful people. Here are just some of the attractions and points of interest on the Upper West Side:

  • American Museum of Natural History
  • Rose Center for Earth and Space
  • New-York Historical Society
  • Children’s Museum of Manhattan.
  • Cafe des Artistes
  • Tavern on the Green Restaurant
  • Columbus Avenue and its world class restaurants and shops.
  • Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts sits between 61st and 66th Streets on Broadway. It is home to the New York State Theater, New York City Ballet, the New York City Opera, the Metropolitan Opera House, Avery Fisher Hall, the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, the Vivian Beaumont Theater, Jazz at Lincoln Center (located at 59th Street), the Library and Museum of the Performing Arts, the School of American Ballet and the world-famous Julliard School of Music. The Walter Reade Theater is the home of the Lincoln Center Film Society. Its central plaza is the focus of summer outdoor performances of all kinds and dance nights (free salsa, tango or swing lessons, anyone?). In early winter, the Big Apple Circus pitches its tents here.
The Upper West Side is divided by Columbus Avenue with its ritzy shops and restaurant strip. Amsterdam Avenue is known for its bodegas, along with bars and boutiques. Along Central Park West are famous buildings and landmarks such as Dakota, where John Lennon was killed and Yoko Ono still lives. You may pay your respects to Mr. Lennon across the street in Central Park’s Strawberry Fields memorial.
