On January 10, 2016, I spoke at Affiliate Summit West on a social media marketing topic: How to Optimize Images for Social Media Sharing. In case you missed it, the slides are online here. I gave the audience many tips on what content is proper for each social channel as well as what images look best. Have you checked out the optimizing social media profile images template yet? It contains image sizes for making your brand’s social profiles look good. Did you know, posts with images get more likes, shares, and retweets than those that only include text? Images are more engaging than text, they tell a story, and they simple stand out more than text-only posts, pins and tweets! Optimal image sizes for each social channel are listed in one convenient blog post.

Which Images to Optimize for Social Media Sharing

by Admin

Best Images to Optimize Images for Social Media Sharing

Next month I am speaking at Affiliate Summit 2016 in Las Vegas, which is a semi-annual marketing conference. My session is called, “How to Optimize Images for Social Media Sharing.” Optimizing images for for social media is very important for your social media strategy as well as your search engine optimization (SEO) plan. Even if you do not have a formal SEO plan, it is still a good idea to at least be mindful of you image file sizes so you do not inadvertently slow down the load speed of you web page(s). Load speed is a Google ranking factor.

There are three “homes” for social media images. They are:

  • Social post images
  • Social profile images
  • Website images

Each one needs to be optimized. All three are important to your marketing plan.

Posts with photos, links, check-ins, and videos we save on social media newsfeeds and streams are the images most people think of these images when talking optimization. We have to be careful because each social site has a particular range of sizes that are optimal. The ideal image sizes can be found in my social media post image size guide.

Most social sites have both a profile (small) photo and a larger banner image at the top of the social account. Here is a link to my metrony.com Facebook account. Facebook calls the large banner image, a “cover photo.” metrony YouTube does not have a profile images. Pintalk Pinterest does not have the banner image.

Social profile and banners are another set of images that are also important for optimizing. Many do not consider this when they think of optimization, but your profile photos deliver a critical first impression of you. Social profile photos users a lot about what your business. Be sure that the profile photo and other page elements (like a follow button) do not block anything important on the cover photo.

Remember that old saying? You never get a second chance to make a first impression. Well, it is true, sort of. The great part of being online is we can change up content and images as often as we like. When we get a better headshot, we can change our profile photos too. If your social profile photos do not tell users what you do, sell, or stand for, the consider replacing them and get some professional photography or graphic artist help if needed!

Your website is also part of the optimizing for social media plan. Although you have little control over what your readers share online as user-generated content, you can at least encourage them to share good quality images from your website. Include an image in portrait (taller than it is wide) and landscape (wider than it is tall) layout on each page. This gives the user the ability to share an image appropriate for the layout of the social site.

Take time to listen

Take time to listen

Pope Francis is visiting Philadelphia this weekend. While I am not Catholic, I am excited to listen to and be in the presence of a world leader. One of my sisters is traveling with me, as excited as I am, while another cannot understand our fascination. Officials are advising that it may take hours to pass through security barriers. It will be a long day, but it will be worth it.

Pope Francis is by far the most progressive pope yet. His ideals and policy changes show that he is in touch with the average follower’s concerns. They show his human side. I am interested in his decisions and I want to learn more about him.

This year of traveling to trade shows has taught me there is so much more to learn. I used to go to conferences and attend the networking events and expos, but never stopped to listen to the speakers. They are interesting people with stories and knowledge to share. Whether you agree with them or not, they may have experience you can probably learn from. You only need to make the time to listen.

Speaking to entrepreneurs about branding

by Admin

Last weekend I spoke about branding to a group of entrepreneurs at Manhattan’s largest trade show, NY NOW Speaker. I was fortunate to have a sold out audience that had lots of questions during and at the end of the one hour talk. I made good contacts and connections. The question and answers after the one hour talk lasted 45 minutes, which is great! The questions turned into my dream talk – I got to speak about female entrepreneurship, finding mentors, and how changing the people you associate with can change your life and the way you do business. A friend recently taught me a saying his parents used to say:

“Show me your friends and I will tell you who you are”

I always wondered if you should judge a person by their friends. I am finding that this is true although I don’t want it to be. My world changed when a friend of mine asked a friend of his bring me to a networking group. I never did any business out of that group, but I learned a lot from the high-end corporate accountants and attorneys there. They are brilliant, resourceful, and connected. Who you associate with can change your world.
